Neurodegenerative disease (ND) is a broad term used to describe neurological disorders caused by a mixture of genetic and environmental influences that lead to gradual and progressive neuron structure and function loss.  Brain development is known to depend on microRNA regulation, and recent evidence suggests a link between microRNAs as genetic regulators and neurodegenerative disease development. The microRNAs selected for this panel cover a wide range of diseases, including Alzheimer's, Huntington's, and Parkinson's Disease.

The decision by stem cells to renew or differentiate is a tightly regulated process controlled by key regulators, including microRNA. microRNAs negatively regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level to impact cell fate, and, in some cases, have been shown to aid in the generation of induced pluripotent stem cells.
